Hmm tempting

Just had this email exchange on OK Cupid. Oh and as background, one of my pics is me pretending to walk through the Platform 9 3/4 at King’s Cross because I am amazingly awesome. Another pic is of me hiking a glacier. Ok, now you may proceed.

Him:
That 7% enemy surely doesn’t come from platform 9 3/4. But I must know, where did you find that awesome ice hike. I will exchange it to ice caves within 2h from Portland.

Me:
It’s the Franz Josef glacier in New Zealand. It was totally awesome. Where are the ice caves??

Him:
Yours is too far :( They are by Mt. Adams. I am planning a day trip May 6 or 7 with few friends. You are welcome to join.

Um…no thank you, random stranger, I don’t want to go on a day trip with you and a few other strangers to the wilderness so I can get murdered. But I appreciate the offer.

Back to Ok Cupid

So things are kind of fizzling with new boy. We had an ok date on Friday (rented Young Adult, really funny movie!)  But the night as a whole was kind of awkward with lots of silences. We’ll see where it goes but in the meantime I’m responding to other emails on Ok Cupid since I’m preeetty sure new boy is also dating other people at the same time.

Anyway, I logged on and read this email:

How are You? I am ____.

You were in my Quiver. I like your interesting profile… I see some common interests… You seem to be a nice person…The great qualities of your head, heart and spirit are laudable.

I have a balanced life with happiness, peace, fun,…. I have a jolly and joyful job, fabulous and fantastic friends, fine and famous family, and so much to be thankful for. I would love to share these blessings with someone special like you…

If you are interested, shall we begin to communicate?

Have a good one.

Cheers

Haha I loved it. Soooo personal and soooo obviously not sent to every girl he emails for really no reason. I do kind of want to know who his fine and famous family is. Also he claims to make over $150,000. Maybe I shouldn’t be so quick to reject him…

Dating update

I was about to go to bed early since I’m a grandma but then realized I could use the extra time to check in and say hello internet people!

Also, I have a date tomorrow and I’m trying to figure out what I should wear that is cute but not TOO cute since we’re going bowling immediately after work. What I’m realizing is I own nothing cute. Nothing cute at all. But I’m still excited :) It’s a second date; we had our first date a couple weeks ago. (He flew off to Taiwan for a week after our 1st date, hence the gap.) (Oh ps, it’s the same guy I talked about in the last post so apparently 3rd time really is the charm)

It’s been FOREVER since I had a really fun first date. Usually, I call it a success if I don’t hate the guy. But I really liked this boy. He made me laugh, in a good way, and seemed to think I was funny too. Doesn’t hurt that he’s super hot. Sidenote: his profile picture is not hot. During the date, I decided that if things didn’t work out I would still email him to tell him he’s hot and to pick a different photo. Boys are so dumb with their profile pictures!

Anyway, the date could’ve been better if I hadn’t been super aware of how I was acting. When I got to the bar, I ran into this guy I know through Dominic (my bro-in-law). You know when you don’t want to run into people you know? On a first date.

So of course I had to say hi and explain why I was absolutely not going to be sitting with him. Then I walked away and tried to figure out if my date was there yet since I’d forgotten to double check his profile pic so I kind of didn’t really know what he was supposed to look like, besides nondescript brown haired boy. I walked up to this guy who cooould be him? And it wasn’t him. Then I turned around and I realized I was being watched and laughed at by the guy I knew. Ugh. Other sidenote? My dates have it sooo easy. There aren’t usually that many red headed girls waiting alone at a bar. Brown haired boys? Tons of them.

Anyway, my date got there and I made sure to sit with my back to Dominic’s friend and tried to act natural. But throughout the date I’m thinking, am I laughing too loudly? Can they hear what we’re saying? Then, halfway through the date, the friend heads to the bathroom and on his way out does a hugely exaggerated swagger with two thumbs up to me. It was SO HARD not to laugh!! If I could’ve hit him without making my date awkward, I would have. I’m the queen of straight face though since my date didn’t see any of it.

But date was good :) And I like that we’re bowling tomorrow even though I suck at bowling and have nothing to wear :) Ok I’m going to go stare blankly at my closet and dresser for an hour and then go to sleep.

My new hat!

Ok. I think I have whatever power you get when you read The Secret or watch The Secret or whatever you’re supposed to do with that. Isn’t it about how if you think something, you can make it happen? Let’s go with that since otherwise I’ll make no sense. But seriously, I have powers. Last Thursday, I was going to have a date with a new boy and I woke up and DID NOT want to have to go on a first date. I’d gone to Vegas the weekend before (holler!!) and that whole week I wasn’t home before 8:30pm and by the time Thursday rolled around I just wanted a night off. So I thought, man I hope he cancels. And he did!!! He got sick and we rescheduled to today.

Today, I’m exhausted. My asshole cat Harold thought it would be hilarious to play with something under my headboard while I tried to sleep. I sleep with earplugs because Harold is always an asshole but usually he’s a somewhat quiet one. But earplugs do nothing when he’s rattling something under the headboard. Then, at 3am he knocked over my glass of water and I had to clean it all up. Speaking of, go to www.mycatisadick.com. Cracks me up.

Anyway, so again, I was thinking maaan I hope he cancels. And he text me at 5:30 saying traffic was terrible on Hwy 26 and he didn’t think he’d be able to make it into town until 6:30 (our date was at 6). I of course investigated and A. he wasn’t lying and B. ODOT said the delay would be over 2 hours!! So I said turn around and let’s pick another day.

On one hand, maybe we’re cursed. On the other hand, YAY FREE DAY!!! I don’t even have to do any work for my part-time job so I really have a truly free evening and it’s marvelous. I’m going to work on the never-ending Thermal sleeve and catch up on TV. My sweater project is not looking good but I’m not giving up!! I will have 12 sweaters come December 2012 or else!!

I’ll post a progress post on Thermal later since I haven’t taken any photos yet and I have a sweet Franklin cat on my lap (she would never ever wake me up in the middle of the night unless it was to politely ask me to cuddle, which is why she’s my pretty girl princess and Harold is a dick) (Also I should stop talking about my cats if I’d like to get married and have babies before I’m 40)

ANYWAY, on Sunday I was discouraged by how looooong Thermal is taking, and it started snowing outside so I decided I needed a quick pick-me-up project. Enter the Irish Hiking Hat.

During the Rose City Yarn Crawl, my mom bought me my first skein of madelinetosh and it had been calling my name ever since. This is tosh chunky in the Fawn colorway. OMG I LOVED THIS YARN. Every single part of knitting this was fabulous. The yarn was so smushy, the pattern was exactly what I’d wanted, it was so fun. Here it is on my head this morning:

Do you see the snow on my window? It’s SPRING, PORTLAND. Also, I was almost late to work because it’s very hard to take a picture of yourself from the side using a touch screen phone. But I persevered. You’re welcome, internet.

I changed the pattern from how it was written and, if that at all interests you, I put the notes on my project page.

Dating

I haven’t posted about dating in forever! Most of that is because I was dating a very nice guy for a little bit and nice guys aren’t particularly funny to write about. I mean, it’s good for me to be dating somebody normal, but my stories aren’t really as good. That petered out mid January though so I no longer really have a good excuse. But I’m going on a date next week so there’s that!

Anyway, I just got home from happy hour with an old friend I haven’t hung out with in YEARS and she was telling me all of her dating stories, which were awesome, and I told her some of mine, including of course this one. Our server came up to us in the middle of my cross dressing Bryan story and Judy, being Judy, caught up the server so she could hear the rest. The best part was our server came back later to tell us her own bad dating story. She’s 31, her boyfriend was 32, and he kept getting up at 9am and disappearing on the weekends and then coming back. She would ask him where he went and he’d mumble something about Walmart having a good sale. Later, she was at his place and looked in his closet and he had 4 shelves of action figures. And not in boxes, like he was some 40 year old virgin collecting items which she could have excused. But posed and organized into scenes. She said a whole shelf was dedicated to Star Wars scenes.

He caught her looking and asked her how much longer he had in the relationship. A day? A week?  She told us he lasted 2 more weeks.

I was dyiiing. I love Portland.

February so far

This is my first weekend since starting my job where I can actually just relax. I don’t have any parties, dinners, garden shows, anything on the agenda. It’s wonderful. So far, I’ve spent most of my morning watching Downton Abbey and knitting. I LOVE Downton Abbey!!! I inhaled season 1 and now I’m into season 2. I’ll catch all up by tomorrow at this rate.

Speaking of knitting, my February projects were to do two Lizard Ridge squares and finish my Thermal. I’ve finished the two blocks, here’s proof of one:

The other one still needs the ends woven in and some blocking. I want to keep doing at least 1-2 squares a month so I can have a finished blanket next winter! This last Christmas, I’d asked for more Noro Kureyon in crazy colors since I’ve been having a hard time buying different skeins. I’ll buy something I think is totally different, then I knit it up and it looks like all my other blocks. So my mom/Santa complied and I now have a basket of Noro that makes my eyes bleed:

There are 3 skeins in there that I chose, but the rest are my mom’s. I can’t wait to knit them up and brighten up my blanket!! I would NEVER have bought these colors but I really think it’s what my blanket needs. For now, I just keep adding blocks to my pile and making Franklin very happy.

I wake up to find her on my her Lizard pile all the time. She looks like Princess and the Pea.

So…Thermal. I really don’t know what I was thinking making this my February sweater. I completely forgot this sweater was knit on size 2 needles. The yarn is fingering, people!! I needed a longer break from fingering than just a month or so. Like last month, this is another UFO. I started this in August 2010 and I don’t really know when I stopped knitting it but here’s where I left off:

This is knit up to the armholes. (Also, can everyone see the mistake?? I just saw it last night and my heart dropped. But I’m deciding it won’t be too noticeable when I’m wearing it.)

Since this picture, I’ve managed to knit 6 inches of the back but…it’s not looking good for a February finish. I might switch around what I do for March to compensate and catch up. I was planning on doing Tangled Yoke in March but maybe Bergen Street Cardigan would be faster? What do you all think? They’re both DK but mostly stockinette.

While you ponder March choices, I’m going to assemble my new Ikea bed!! So excited to have a real bed and not just a metal frame! Once it’s done, I’ll get back to my Downton Abbey marathon and knitting since Harold says, I better finish this sweater or else.

That’s him mid pounce. I was trying to get a picture of him playing with sock bunny and he decided to attack me like an angry celebrity punching paparazzi.

My January Projects

Geez! I knew I hadn’t posted in a while but didn’t realize it’d been SO long!! That’s what happens I guess when I start a new job and get sick and very very tired haha. I started the job Feb 1st and it was kind of a hard transition from working 9-3 to working 9-5:30. (Yeah, I know, boohoo Mary). I guess I’ve been there 2.5 weeks now but it still feels like just 2 days. This was my first full week of work since I got terribly sick two weekends ago and had to stay home on Monday. Calling in sick after only just starting a job is incredibly lame but I still had a fever.

ANYWAY, on to more fun stuff! Knitting updates! My goals for January were to finish my socks, finish a glove, and finally seam up my Michael Kors tunic and I totally (almost) did it!! Didn’t exactly succeed at finishing the tunic on time, but it’s not my fault! I ran out of yarn!

Here’s what it looked like January 31:

SO CLOSE!! It was all seamed but I’d miscalculated how long the collar would take to knit. Turns out all that knitting was for nothing though since I ran out of yarn 4.5 inches into the collar when it’s supposed to be 9 inches. Loud sigh. I could have bought more yarn but I knew adding an errand to this sweater would mean another few months/years of waiting to finish it. I ended up ripping it out and just doing a crew neck. Which, I probably actually prefer. Here it is basking in the sunshine, officially finished February 10th:

It fits and I love it but I can’t capture any pictures in my dark, dumb apartment. You’ll have to take my word for it. But as soon as I get a decent picture, I’ll post it here! I haven’t worn it yet since it’s super warm and I prefer to be not super warm.

I finished my glove on time though!! I LOVE IT.

I don’t care at all that you can’t see the cables. I LOVE how the yarn striped up. Next time I knit this pattern though, I will use a solid yarn. But since these are for me, and I love them, there are no complaints.

I’ll post soon about my February knitting progress :) Hope everyone is doing great! I have some major blog catching up to do.
